Organised by Claire de Rouen Books  and Studio Voltaire this series of reading groups expands from the research around and exhibition of work by Jo Spence and the Not Our Class programme at Studio Voltaire. Group Practice is a gathering of artists, writers and readers from in and outside contemporary art practice, to discuss texts, images and artworks in relation to representation, issues of class, gender, health and the body, combining personal experience, political understanding and critical theory.

For Group Practice #2 we will examine contemporary approaches to childbirth. The burgeoning interest in alternative approaches to labour, its representation and relationship to the body shares some questions brought up by Spence’s interest in alternative medical practices. We hope to discuss some recent research and our responses to it – emotional, intellectual or ethical.
