Sanya Kantarovsky

We are pleased to present NO JOKE, Sanya Kantarovsky’s first monograph, published by Studio Voltaire and Koenig Books. Produced as an extension to his 2015 Studio Voltaire exhibition Apricot Juice, this publication brings together a large selection of works from Kantarovsky’s diverse practice, offering an extensive overview of the past six years.

NO JOKE has emerged from of a collaborative process between Kantarovsky and designer Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey. The resulting publication is akin to an illustrated novel or picture book where texts run concurrent with images, creating deliberate and accidental relationships between words and images.

This relationship between the literary and the visual also echoes Kantarovsky’s exhibition at Studio Voltaire, the starting point for this monograph, where each painting was paired with a paragraph from Mikhail Bulgakov’s seminal novel The Master and Margarita.

This monograph includes contributions from Eli Diner, Allison Katz and Angie Keefer. NO JOKE is designed and edited by Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey, Liverpool.


About the contributors

Sanya Kantarovsky’s (b. 1982, Moscow, Russia; lives and works in New York) practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture and occasionally film. Recent solo and two person exhibitions include: In the Gutter, Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2016); Gushers, Marc Foxx, Los Angeles (2015); Allergies, Casey Kaplan, New York (2014) and Little Vera with Ella Kruglyanskaya, KIM?, Riga (2014). Kantarovsky participated in the exhibition Notes on Neo-Camp at Studio Voltaire, London in 2013, and was recently included in the group exhibitions The Eccentrics, Sculpture Center, New York (2016) and Over you/you, The 31st Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana (2015). Kantarovsky is represented by Marc Foxx, Los Angeles; Tanya Leighton, Berlin; and Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London.

Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey (b. 1973, York; lives and works in Liverpool) is a graphic designer, author and editor. Since 2006 he has collaborated with David Reinfurt under the name Dexter Sinister; and since 2010 with Reinfurt, Angie Keefer and Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey on The Serving Library, an online publishing/archiving platform with a parallel physical space in Liverpool. He also co-founded the arts-journal Dot Dot Dot in 2000.

Eli Diner (b. 1978; lives and works in Los Angeles, US) is a writer, curator and doctoral candidate in history at UCLA. He is the US editor of Flash Art and his writing has also appeared in Artforum, Bookforum, Bulletins of the Serving Library, Frieze and The Los Angeles Review of Books. In 2015, he launched Hakuna Matata, a project space, sculpture garden and serialized novella.

Allison Katz (b. 1980, Montreal, Canada; lives and works in London, UK) is an artist and curator who graduated with an MFA from Columbia University in 2008. Recent exhibitions include: Independent, New York, USA, presented by The Approach, London, UK, (2016); Shelf Paintings in collaboration with Fredrik Vaerslev, All Around Amateur, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen, Norway, (2016) and DAS INSTITUT with Allison Katz in DAS INSTITUT, Serpentine Gallery, London, UK (2016).

Angie Keefer (b. 1977 Alabama, US; lives in New York, US) has exhibited, published, performed, taught, or otherwise produced work with The Whitney Biennial; Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre; Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp; Kunstverein, Amsterdam; ICA, Philadelphia; Office for Contemporary Art, Norway; Witte de With, Rotterdam; and Yale Union, Portland.
